Our man Ives at ESPNSoccernet is reporting that The Biggest Midget in the Game ™ is leaving MLS for the semi-obscurity of Portugal's Benfica. Aside from Champions League matches, don't expect to see him on American TV often; for a player that as recently as 2 years ago was the face of soccer in America that seems like Siberia.
That's not necessarily an indictment of Benfica, who along with Sporting and Porto, are arguably the biggest club in Portugal. But Portugal is like Scotland in that once you get out side the top 3 clubs the level of play and support drop dramatically. So that's like saying Smurfette was the hottest of all the girl Smurfs....it's a compliment, but only by default.
So the clip above looks to stand as his last goal, in his last game at RSL (against Boca Juniors). It may also be the last goal Yank audiences see from him for a long time.

benfica almost seems like a stepping stone club though. if you show quality in the MLS it doesn't seem to mean a whole lot(give or take an instance or two) but showing quality in a European competition such as the champions leauge could lead to chances in Italy, Spain, or England.
With the quality he was able to show at the U20s i think freddie may be a little better than i though. i guess we'll see.
While you're right about Portugal's big three, Benefica sure the hell isn't Real Salt Lake and now maybe Adu will have to sweat to make the team.
Guess it's not so hard to see why Kreis is smiling yet this move could benefit all if Adu can transfer his U20 magic to the Big Boys League... Real benefits already.
Hi,
He is going to be seen by 50 to 60 thousand fans per game in the stands, counting me. And if he is as good as was promised three years ago this will be an excellent move for him.
Three words.
Portuguese American Club. East Newark. Reprehizent.
After slamming the Portuguese for friggin' years over the fact that their style of play should include a redesigned field with a diving board and pool somewhere in the midfield, I'm now going to have to go and watch games once and a while.
The Scots was enough I'm going to be a mess on weekends at home now.
